A local racehorse rider took part in her third Canadian Derby championship this past summer.
Kimberley Dunsmore is an exercise rider with Diodoro Racing. Robertino Diodoro captured his third Canadian Derby championship at Edmonton’s Northlands Park on Aug. 19.
This year’s race, the 88th running of the $150,000 Canadian Derby, featured an extremely close finish with Chief Know It All taking the title. Chief Know It All was claimed at Kentucky’s Churchill Downs this year for $100,000 and has also won the $150,000 British Columbia Derby.
Diodoro is currently rated as the fourth leading trainer in North America according to races won.
The 2017 Canadian Derby victory followed wins in 2014 and 2015 for Diodoro, who was joined by Dunsmore for all three championships.
Thoroughbred racing has concluded at Northlands Park for the year, as the majority of the horses have moved to Calgary for the balance of the racing season.
Next year will be the last for Thoroughbred racing at Northlands Park, as the derby will be moved to a new facility near the Edmonton International Airport in 2019.
