Kobe Walker will graduate from the junior A ranks following the Lloydminster Bobcats’ 2017-18 campaign.
Walker, 19, has committed to play for the NCAA Division 1 Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Tigers in 2018-19.
The Lloydminster product and Bobcats assistant captain announced the move a couple of days after he notched three goals and one assist in a 4-1 win against the Sherwood Park Crusaders during Hockey Hooky Day at the Centennial Civic Centre on Jan. 24.
“I just thought it was the best option,” said Walker, who leads the Bobcats with 25 goals and 51 points through 48 games.
“I’ve heard nothing but good things about that school. I’ve heard it’s a great school to be at and it’s all about championships and working hard. That’s what I’m interested in. And, I’ll get a good education.”
Walker said discussions have been ongoing throughout the season between him and the Tigers, with members of their coaching staff attending a few Bobcats’ games this fall and winter to get a closer look at him.
He said they’ve provided him with practice and school schedules as well as videos of the campus and links to program information to help him prepare for the transition.
“It’s a great honour to get recognized by RIT,” he said. “But, at the end of the day, now, it’s all in for the Bobcats. I’m going to play my heart out every game and hopefully we can have a good long season and playoff push.”
